Scope and Contents

Handwritten letter from Marvin C. Ross to Mildred Bliss sending the review by V. Laurent of the handbook on "The Dumbarton Oaks Collection" in the Revue des Etudes Byzantine, XIV, 1956, pages 298-300. review is in French. Marvin tells Mildred that Laurent's criticism is 1) correct about the inscription on the silver cross -- "we can now say the Cross of Romanus II"; 2) He is wrong about the pilgrim's token. Seals are round, not rectangular and in addition the D.O. example was found with other pilgrims tokens; 3) The date of M [ichel] Stryphnos was corrected some time ago; 4) Everyone interprets the inscription on the St. Demetrius pendant differently. But [Andre] Grabar's theories are not necessarily altered.

He tells Mildred the ring, the honorary consul is said to have been found at Mersine [Mersin] in Cilicia. The Cosmas who had once been an honorary consul had been sent there as an administrative officer in 645-646 -- the very period to which we can ascribe the ring. The ring may well have belonged to this particular Cosmas.

He is flying to Cleveland at the invitation of [William M.] Milliken to see his recent purchases of Byzantine objects then on to Chicago for work.
