Alfred Riocreux botanical watercolors

Scope and Content:

The Riocreux watercolors comprise 87 original watercolor paintings in [matting]. The watercolors have been detached from the binding. The paintings vary in size from 22 x 28 cm up to 29 x 36 cm. There are two plates numbered 73 but they are not duplicates. Sixty-one illustrations were reproduced in Auguste Loiseleur Deslongchamps’s Herbier Général de l'Amateur, Deuxiéme série, t.1 (Paris: Didot Jeune, 1839).

Arnold Arboretum records

Overview:

The Arnold Arboretum is a living museum that is co-managed by Harvard University and the City of Boston. In the 1950s a large portion of the Arboretum’s library and specimens were transferred to the Harvard University Herbaria in Cambridge. Some people disagreed with this decision, and sued Harvard over the move. The legal dispute has been nicknamed “The Arnold Arboretum Controversy.”

This collection includes publications by the Arboretum and material about the controversy.

Charles Edward Faxon papers

Scope and content:

The collection contains original artwork, published plates, and manuscript material. Artwork includes drawings and paintings of plants, animals, and scenery. Manuscript material consists of translations of portions of Julius Milde's 1869 “Botrychiorum Monographia.” Faxon's translations date from November 1876 and may have been made while he was in Europe.

Forty-five original watercolors of plants mounted on paper. The watercolors may have been produced in Canton. Many bear "M. and J. Lay or J. Whatman” watermarks dated 1815 to 1819. Watercolors include butterflies, moths, or other possible pollinators. Latin names have been added in pencil.

Coloured botanical drawings by a Chinese artist

Forty-nine original watercolors. Probably produced in Canton. Many bear “J. Whatman” 1804 or 1805 or “I. Taylo(r)” watermarks. The drawings generally include samples of fruits or seeds and a dissection of the flower to show its structure. Latin names and occasional Chinese labels appear in pencil on either front or reverse side. Includes a typed index that lists all plates including plate 19 Eriobotrya japonica which is lacking.

Field data of the Sino-American botanical expedition

The collection consists of field data for collecting numbers 1-2085 recorded on preprinted specimen labels. Specimens were collected between August 25 and October 9, 1980. The preprinted sheets include Thomas S. Elias in the list of collectors. He was replaced on the expedition by James L. Luteyn.

This collection contains a card file and indices used by Perry in her research for “The medicinal plants of east and southeast Asia” as well as reviews and publication correspondence between Perry, Richard Alden Howard, and MIT Press. There is also one folder of reviews and correspondence pertaining to Perry’s translation of H.J. Lam’s “Fragmenta Papuana,” published in “Sargentia” in 1945.

Manuscript of Flora Indica by Thomas Pennant

This collection contains a preliminary copy of the “Flora Indica” which was eventually published in the fourth volume of Pennant’s “Outlines of the Globe.” It was prepared by an amanuensis and is annotated in pencil in Pennant’s hand. The bound manuscript is 160 pages and measures 10.5" x 15".

Thomas Nuttall collection of illustrations for North American Sylva
