Scope and Contents

Consists of edited and unedited drafts of books, book chapters, book introductions, journal, newspaper, and magazine articles, and bibliographies authored by Baumgartner, along with accompanying notes and occassional correspondence. Writings cover topics such as population policy, maternal and child health, epidemiology, and prenatal and neonatal care, and proncipally relate to New York City. Includes a proposed book on public health training in New York, a history of the New York City Department of Health edited by Baumgartner, and New York Times articles by and about Baumgartner. Drafts of an unpublished biography of Baumgartner have been folded into this series. About 2 cubic feet of reprints (from Baumgartner and others) were discarded.

Collection is open for research. Access requires advance notice. Access to Harvard Unviersity records is restricted for 50 years from the date of creation. These restrictions are noted where they appear in Series I. Access to personal and patient information is restricted for 80 years from the date of creation. These restrictions appear in Series I and V. Researchers may apply for access to restricted records. Consult Public Services for further information.

The Leona Baumgartner Papers are stored offsite. Researchers are advised to contact reference staff concerning retrieval of material.

Items in this series were found scattered throughout the collection, and, as much as is possible, are arranged starting with ennumerated publications, followed by unnumbered publications in their original order.
