Lachlan Forrow papers

The Lachlan Forrow papers, 1970-1999 (inclusive), are the product of Forrow's participation in the nuclear disarmament movement as a member of the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW), Greater Boston Physicians for Social Responsibility (GBPSR) and Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR). Materials include correspondence, meeting minutes, committee files, clippings, newsletters, writings, conference files, and reference files.

Biographical / Historical

Lachlan Forrow (1955-), A.B. (summa cum laude), 1978, Princeton University, Princeton, New Jersey; M.D., 1983, Harvard Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts, is a Senior Fellow at the Harvard Medical School Center for Bioethics, Lecturer on Global Health and Social Medicine, Harvard Medical School, and President Emeritus of The Albert Schweitzer Fellowship.

B. Lachlan Forrow serves as Faculty Associate at the Edmund J. Safra Center for Ethics, Harvard University and Corresponding Faculty, Department of Medicine, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. Forrow was Director of Ethics Programs (1998-2020) and Director of Palliative Care Programs (1999-2016) at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston, Massachusetts. He was Associate Professor of Medicine, Harvard Medical School (2000-2020). Forrow self-identified as white in the Collection Creator Background and Identity form.

Beginning in 1988, Forrow was an active member of the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW). He served as Board Chair (1993-1996), CEO (1994-1995), and member of the Board of Directors (1998-2000). Forrow was also active with the Physicians for Social Responsibility beginning in 1981. He served on the National Board of Directors (1986 to 1989) and Executive Committee (1986-1987). He was also involved with the Greater Boston Physicians for Social Responsibility, serving on the Steering Committee from 1986 to 1996. He was President of the Rhode Island Chapter from 1984 to 1986.

The collection was gifted to the Harvard Medical Library by Lachlan Forrow in 2022.

Processing Information

Processed by Rebecca C. Thayer, May 2024.

Collection was processed according to Level 1 protocol. The processer rehoused materials into archival folders. Materials were removed from binders and foldered. The archivist transcribed folder titles from original folders which were then discarded. Titles were supplied for unfoldered materials. Archivist-supplied folder titles are in brackets on the physical folders. The archivist rearranged materials that were out of alphabetical order. Out-of-scope confidential material was destroyed.
