Scope and Contents
Consists of four notebooks and three letters. One notebook is a carbon copy of letters sent to “Dad” during a train trip through Canada, presumably Macmillan, Jr. to Macmillan, Sr. Two notebooks are class notes from Macmillan’s time at Harvard Medical School on pathology and an unidentified subject. The remaining, larger, notebook is notes from a class on music. The three letters are from the last years of Macmillan’s life and deal with business matters.

Alexander S. Macmillan, Jr., (1922-1978), was Director of the Department of Radiology at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary (now Mass Eye and Ear) from 1960-1972. He received his M D from Harvard Medical School in 1946 and held an internship at the Boston City Hospital before serving in the United States Air Force. After decommissioning, he trained in radiology at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, Boston City Hospital, and the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, becoming a specialist in otolaryngological radiology. Macmillan died unexpectedly in March 1978; he was survived by his wife, Jeanne, and six children: Alec, Cameron, Alison, James, Anne, and Lucy.
