Heberden, William, 1767-1845. Five autograph letters to Great Britain. Privy Council, 1811-1812 Digital

Scope and Contents

Contains copies of reports to the Queen's Council, likely referring to Great Britain's Privy Council, and the Committee Appointed to Examine the Physicians who have Attended His Majesty during His Illness, in William Heberden's hand, dated 1811-1812. In one report, six months into the king's bout of illness, Heberden recommends he follow a daily schedule, which may distract him from "his unhappy situation." Other letters reference the king's "insanity," potential changes to his care, and his personal dependance on Heberden. Heberden also criticized a treatment plan that had kept George III isolated from his family. Additional attending physicians listed on reports were Henry Halford (1766-1844) and Matthew Baillie (1761-1823). There is also a copy of the examination of the physicians by the committee, with questions and answers about the king's health.
