Series III. Writings and Publications, 1934-1999

Scope and Contents

Consists of reprints of Fredrick J. Stare’s scientific and popular publications related to nutrition. The bulk of the papers were published between 1977 and 1999, although the series also includes occasional papers and booklets published during the earlier period of his career. Frequent topics include: nutrition education for medical students; nutrition education for children; cardiovascular health, cardiac disease, blood pressure, arteriosclerosis, and atherosclerosis; quackery and nutritional misinformation; fat and cholesterol; children’s nutrition and school food; respiration; food fortification; hyperactivity; diets and food faddism; health foods and nutraceuticals; food labeling; sugar; sodium; vitamins; metabolism; and cancer. Series also includes: annotated volumes of two of Stare's publications, Dear Dr. Stare: What Should I Eat?: A Guide to Sensible Nutrition, with Virginia Aronson (1982) and Nutrition for Good Health with Margaret McWilliams (1974); publications concerning Fredrick J. Stare and his career; a nomination of him for the CASE District 1 Distinguished Friend of Education Award; a manuscript of his doctoral thesis, Studies on the Respiration of Animal Tissues; a photographic print of Stare; and occasional reprints not written by Stare but maintained with his publications, possibly due to similar subject matter or because the author was from the Harvard School of Public Health Department of Nutrition.

Access to Harvard University records is restricted for 50 years from the date of creation. These restrictions are noted where they appear in Series I, II, and IV. Access to patient, health, personnel, student, and personal information is restricted for 80 years from the date of creation. These restrictions appear in Series I, II, IV, V, VI, and VIII. Researchers may apply for access to restricted records. Consult Public Services for further information.

Access to digital files in this collection (as found in Series II) is also subject to the above restrictions. Additionally, access is premised on the availability of a computer station, requisite software, and/or the ability of Public Services staff to review and/or print out records of interest in advance of an on-site visit.

Audio and audio-visual recordings are restricted to access until such time as they can be converted to digital media. Recordings may also be subject to the above restrictions; once converted, recordings will be restricted based on the recording's title, or as per the restrictions for the folder from which the recording was removed.

Arrangement

Series III is arranged in two groups. The first group of files (each labeled “Reprints”) is arranged chronologically, as per the original arrangement. The second group is arranged alphabetically by folder title.
