Scope and Contents

Consists of correspondence, administrative records, manuscript drafts, collected publications, and periodical clippings generated and compiled by Fredrick J. Stare in the course of his professional appointments, professional activities, research, public speaking, and publishing activities. Professional activities records were generated through Stare’s involvement with numerous organizations and include membership records, fundraising records, reports, conference and public speaking records, newsletters, publications, research funding records, and related correspondence. American Council on Science and Health (ACSH) records make up the bulk of these records, and include: financial and fundraising records; personnel and hiring records; papers, reports, and newsletters; legal testimonies and lawsuit records; correspondence regarding nutrition-related stories in the media and government discourse; and periodical clippings. Other organizations frequently represented include the New England Conservatory (NEC), International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW), and Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR). Harvard University professional and administrative records were primarily generated through Stare’s work in the Harvard School of Public Health Department of Nutrition, and his fundraising work for the Francis A. Countway Library of Medicine. These records include: meeting minutes; fundraising and financial records; personnel and hiring correspondence; research-related correspondence; and newspaper clippings. Research records include correspondence, administrative records, and occasional data for a variety of projects, including: the Ireland-Boston Heart Study (“Irish Brothers Study”); various fortification studies; and nutrition studies at Phillips-Exeter Academy and St. Paul’s School, among other projects. Publishing records include manuscript drafts, royalty statements, periodical clippings, and related correspondence for Stare’s books, scientific papers, popular articles, and newspaper columns. Additional personal and professional correspondence frequently concerns: travel; nutrition and research advice to colleagues and corporations; nutrition advice to patients and readers of Stare’s popular writings; reviews and comments on Stare’s and colleagues’ publications; his appearances on television and radio programs; introductions and reference letters for colleagues and students; and family history and genealogy. Series also includes: blind peer review records for papers reviewed by Stare; occasional photographic prints of Stare and his colleagues; and several IBM magnetic cards. Frequent and prominent correspondents include Elizabeth Whelan (1943-2014), Bernard Lown (born 1921), Ann Landers (Eppie Lederer (1918-2002)), and Julia Child (1912-2004).
