Series I. Research Records 1910-2012, 1931-2012

Scope and Contents

Consists of materials relating to Paul C. Zamecnik's career as a research scientist, relating to work accomplished during his time at Harvard Medical School, the Collis P. Huntington Memorial Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital, the Worcester Foundation for Experimental Biology, Hybridon, Inc., and ZATA Pharmaceuticals, Inc., as well as a brief time working at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. This series includes research notes and data, the bulk of which was generated by Zamecnik's own laboratory work. Some of the research material comes from peers and colleagues, and was integrated into Zamecnik's personal work. The topics of Zamecnik's research vary over his nearly eighty-year career as a research scientist, but focus on biochemistry, genetics, and gene repair throughout. Included amongst these research records are notes (including research data), publications, and grant records on subjects such as protein synthesis, RNA and ribosomal structures, tRNA, microRNA, ribonucleotides, diadenosine tetraphosphate, chloroplasts, Rous sarcoma virus replication and transformation, UV radiation and cancer, plaque assays, inhibition, gradients, melanin, cell storage, ATP, and DNA modification. Further records from later in his career relate to the discovery of antisense oligonucleotides and possible genetic repair of viruses, diseases, cancers, and drug-resistant infections, including but not limited to Hodgkin's and Huntington's diseases, HIV, HTLV, cystic fibrosis, malaria, Leishmania, prostate cancer, and celiac disease.

In Subseries A, records include research notes from the many topics Zamecnik explored as a research scientist across many formats, from reference files to raw and analyzed data, research summaries, research protocols and experiment procedures, and accompanying related scientific journal reprints, correspondence, and notes.

In Subseries B, files contain collected published scientific articles, newspaper clippings, and manuscripts drafts written by peers and colleagues used in Zamecnik's research processes. Included with some research materials are data, notes, and related correspondence.

Subseries C contains records pertaining to research grants with which Zamecnik was involved, including many for which he was the principle investigator. In this subseries are grant applications, budget allocations, descriptions of research protocols, summaries, and methods, and progress reports.

Subseries D contains research-related materials included in the 2017 accrual to the collection (Acc. #2018-001). These materials include some research data; collected publications centered on Zamecnik's research interests; grant applications and the resulting findings and papers; slides from public presentations of research; and a few drafts by colleagues and peers. These materials are accompanied by related correspondence and notes.
