Scope and Contents

Consists of William A. Haseltine’s correspondence with friends, family members, and colleagues, frequently accompanied by notes, meeting minutes, agendas, curricula vitae, reports, drafts, and letters of recommendation. A majority of the correspondence pertains to the administrative and research activities at Human Genome Sciences and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Administrative correspondence includes job applications, letters of recommendation, curricula vitae, research project reports, and meeting minutes. Interfiled with Haseltine’s administrative correspondence are letters of congratulations and thank you notes Haseltine received and sent to friends and colleagues, as well as correspondence with his sister Florence Haseltine, and his uncle, Charles Haseltine. Frequent correspondents include: Deeda McCormick Blair; Robert Gallo; Gary Buck; Anthony S. Fauci; Lloyd Cutler; and Marguerite Littman. A small number of patient records is in this subseries.

Arrangement

Records have been maintained in their original order, as grouped and maintained by the creator. Haseltine employed several different filing structures for correspondence. While the original groupings were maintained, occasional folders located in each of these groupings were reordered to better promote chronological or alphabetical access. Similar groupings of records found elsewhere in the collection have been integrated. Subseries IVA has been arranged into seven sub-subseries: 1. Chronological Correspondence, 1981-1992; 2. Alphabetical Correspondence, 1978, 1988-1992; 3. Alphabetical Incoming Correspondence, 1962, 1982-2001; 4. Alphabetical Outgoing Correspondence, 1992-2001; 5. Alphabetical by Correspondent, 1975-2005, undated; 6. Subject Correspondence, 1981-2007, undated; 7. Alphabetical Correspondence Related to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, 1967, 1977-1993, undated.
