Historical Note

Dr. Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr. served from 1875 to 1888 as President of the second Boston Medical Library's Executive Committee. Upon retiring from office, he donated his collection of 698 medical books to the Library, which accepted them formally on January 29, 1889. Exactly seventy-five years later, as the Boston Medical Library was planning to join with the Harvard Medical Library in forming the new Francis A. Countway Library of Medicine, members gathered on January 29, 1964 to remember Dr. Holmes' generosity and look to the future.
