The first Boston Medical Library, founded in 1805 by members of the Medical Improvement Society and administered for much of its tenure by Harvard Medical School faculty, lasted until 1826, when its collection of medical literature was donated to the Boston Athenaeum. When a second Boston Medical Library was founded in 1875, the Boston Atheneum returned many important volumes to the newly reconstituted library. This second Boston Medical Library continues today as part of the Francis A. Countway Library of Medicine.
