Historical Note

The first organizational meeting of the International Lilac Society (ILS) was held in May, 1971. The Society was incorporated in the State of New York in 1974. ILS is administered by a Board of Directors elected by the membership. The 15-member board elects officers of the corporation which consists of a President, Executive Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, Editor, Executive Vice-Presidents for Canada and Europe, and Regional Vice-Presidents distributed around the globe. ILS also maintains standing committees on research, publications, audits, propagation. ILS is governed as a 501c(3) (non-profit) corporation under the laws of New York State and the United States of America.

ILS Mission and Purpose

The purposes for which the Corporation has been organized are as follows:

“It is intended that the membership in this not-for-profit Corporation will be comprised of people who share in particular appreciation and fondness of the lilac. By the exchange of knowledge, experiences and facts gained by members, it is proposed that the individual members will increase their knowledge of the lilac and thereby help to promote a broadened public understanding and awareness of the genus Syringa L. The thrust is to be three-fold; through education, publication and research.” Copyright 2009 International Lilac Society

Provenance

The main body of the collection was received on deposit in 2006. The Royal Botanical Garden Library, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada was, by a long-standing agreement, the custodian of the Archives of the International Lilac Society (ILS). In 2005, when significant portions of the Royal Botanical Gardens library monograph collection were placed into storage pending decisions about the Garden’s redevelopment, the library could no longer maintain the International Lilac Society’s archives. ILS removed its archive and deposited it at the Arnold Arboretum Archives. Subsequent deposits have been made by members, principally past presidents of the society.

Accruals note

Further accruals expected.

Related Archival Materials note

A full run of all ILS publications reside in the American Journals collection of the Arnold Arboretum Horticultural Library.

Processing Information note

The collection was received with a proposed arrangement, drafted in 1992 by the Winthrop Group, Inc. Archives and Information Services. Processed by Sheila Connor and archives staff, and Kendra Jae, 2013.
