3 boxesThis collection consists of five notebooks containing Wilbur’s lecture notes on Harvard Divinity School courses taken while he was a student there: Joseph Henry Thayer’s lecture on the New Testament (1887-1890); David Gordon Lyon’s lectures on the history of Israel (1888-1889); Crawford Howell Toy’s lectures on the history of the religion of Israel and lectures on the Old Testament (1888-1890); Ephraim Emerton’s lectures on church history (1887-1889); Charles Carroll Everett’s lectures on comparative religion and theology (1888-1890); Francis Greenwood Peabody’s lectures on the philosophy of religion and lectures on the practical ethics of social reform (1888-1890); and George Herbert Palmer’s lectures on philosophy (1887-1888).
Biographical / Historical
Earl Morse Wilbur (April 26, 1866-January 8, 1956) was born in Jericho, Vermont. Wilbur trained for the Congregational ministry at Harvard Divinity School, 1887-1890. He graduated with a double degree: an S.T.B. from the Divinity School and an A.M. in philosophy from Harvard College. He was ordained to the Unitarian ministry in 1892 and served parishes in Portland, Oregon, and Meadville, Pennsylvania. From 1904 to 1931, he was dean and president of the Pacific Unitarian School, now the Starr King School for the Ministry in Berkeley, California. He was a preeminent scholar of Unitarian history, publishing three volumes, Our Unitarian Heritage (1925), History of Unitarianism: Socianism and Its Antecedents (1945), and History of Unitarianism: In Transylvania, England and America to 1900 (1952).
