This autograph, signed letter, dated 1765, is addressed to the writer’s son, Epes Sargent Jr. It talks about the afterlife, and expresses the father’s affection for his son. A transcription of the letter is included.

Biographical / Historical

Epes Sargent, (1721-1779), was born in Gloucester, Massachusetts to Epes and Esther McCarty Sargent. He was a ship owner, and at one time he owned ten vessels which were employed in the fisheries and foreign commerce. He married Catherine Osborn Sargent in 1745, and they had two sons, Epes Jr., and John. Epes Jr. was born in Gloucester in 1748, and John was born in 1751.

Acquisition Information

This collection was donated by Henrietta Sargent of Boston to Tufts College in 1864.
