The first sermon is 32 pages long and is based on “Math:11-29. Learn of me for I am meek & lowly in heart: and ye shall find Rest unto your Souls.” There is an inscription at the end of the sermon in a different hand which states that it is a “Sermon of the Rev. Mr. Fairfield, first minister of Saco, Maine – presented by W. Cushing to the Library of the Theological School in Cambridge.” Rev. Fairfield made a note at the end of the sermon that states it was preached at Pepperellborough in 1785. There are further notes as to where it was preached in 1794 and 1797. The second sermon is 80 pages long and is based on Romans: 5-10. "We shall be saved by His Life." There is an insert which indicates that this sermon was preached in Pepperellborough in 1786 and 1794.

Biographical / Historical

Born in Wenham, Massachusetts, John Fairfield (1737-1819) graduated from Harvard College in 1757. He was engaged as a teacher at Manchester and Roxbury, Massachusetts until he commenced preaching in February 1760. He preached in the Arrowsic Warehouse in Georgetown; the First Parish at Scarboro, and at Dunstable, Massachusetts. He was ordained in 1762, and was settled that same year at the First Church in Pepperellborough (now Saco, Maine). Prior to this, he married Mrs. Mary Cutts, daughter of Capt. Ichabod Goodwin, and widow of Foxwell Cutts of Berwick. John Fairfield died in December, 1819.

The first sermon was donated by W. Cushing. The second sermon was donated by Mrs. H.F. Hamilton.
