Lion, Felix Danford. Sermons, 1940-2001.

The Rev. Felix Danford Lion (1914-2008) was born in Berlin, Massachusetts, and died in Victoria, British Columbia. His parents were Isabella Ferraris Lion and Unitarian Universalist minister Herman F. Lion. He attended DePaul University before transferring to the University of Chicago. After his graduation in 1936 he enrolled at Meadville Theological School and received a BD degree in 1938. In 1966 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from Starr King School for the Ministry and was president of the school's board from 1971 to 1973. During his 47-year-long ministry he served many Unitarian Universalist congregations, which included: the First Unitarian Society in Newton, Massachusetts (1938-1940); the First Unitarian Society in Lawrence, Massachusetts (1940-1945); the Adams Memorial Unitarian Church in Dunkirk, New York (1945-1949); the Unitarian Universalist Church of Palo Alto, California (1949-1972); the Community Church of New York, New York (1972-1975); the Unitarian Universalist Church of Amherst, New York (1975-1981); and the Unitarian Universalist Church of Victoria, British Columbia (1981-1986). Apart from his ministerial duties Lion held several denominational offices, including that of secretary-treasurer to the Essex Unitarian Conference and treasurer of the Unitarian Fellowship for Social Justice. A strong voice for labor relations, civil liberties, and race relations, he worked in 1963 in Mississippi and Alabama with the NAACP, SNNCC, and Dr. Martin Luther King. He also participated in the freedom marches in Selma, Alabama, and Washington, D.C. Later he was founding member and president of the Vancouver Island Coalition for Human Rights and was a member of the International Association for Religious Freedom.
