Papers of Universalist minister, Harold Herbert Niles, the bulk of which consists of sermons and research used to compile his sermons. There are also writings, scrapbooks, and St. Lawrence University files. The papers span 1923-1970.

15 boxesThe bulk of this collection consists of sermons, plus background information he used to compile these sermons, such as news clippings, journal articles, and some correspondence. The sermons are not in any particular order, but they include information such as titles, dates, and the locations where they were delivered. Boxes 1-7 also contain some educational material and pamphlets on various aspects of Unitarian Universalism. Box 7 also contains manuscripts for some of his writings. Box 8 contains copies of his published articles, correspondence, clippings, and scrapbook items. Boxes 9-13 contain scrapbooks. Box 13 also contains personal books of meditation, and other publications. Box 15 contains files related to Niles's work at St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York, during the 1960s.
Biographical / Historical
Harold Herbert Niles (1892-1971) was born in Salem, Massachusetts, and received a BD from the St. Lawrence Theological School in Canton, New York, in 1915. He was ordained a Universalist minister in Henderson, New York, in June 1914. Some of the pastorates he held were: Henderson and Ellisburg, New York, 1913-1916; Lydonville, Vermont, 1916-1917; Concord, New Hampshire, 1917-1923; Denver, Colorado, 1923-1933; Bridgeport, Connecticut, 1933-1940; and Watertown, New York, 1940-1957. Rev. Niles retired in 1957, and was coordinator of religious activities and director of development at St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York, from 1961 to 1964.
