General note

Buonaiuti was an Italian historian and Catholic priest. He is known as one of the leading figures in the Modernist movement in the Catholic Church, which was characterized by a rationalist approach to the Bible and influenced by secularism and modern philosophical systems. Though he declared himself a loyal Catholic, he was excommunicated in 1925. He was professor of the history of Christianity in Rome, but lost this post due to his refusal to sign an oath of loyalty to the Fascist government in Italy.
