General note

Borgese was an Italian writer, journalist, and literary critic. He taught in universities in Italy until 1931, when he was forced to leave that country due to his opposition to the Fascist government. He came to the United States and became a professor of Italian literature at the University of Chicago, and he was active in the antifascist movement in the United States with La Piana, Gaetano Salvemini, and others.
