5.25 linear feet (13 boxes)This collection holds HBS course materials kept by Smith while an MBA student at HBS from 1947-1948. The courses follow Peter W. Smith’s progression through HBS’s curriculum as a graduate from the class of 1948. The materials course packets which contain cases, notes, readings, diagrams, practice problems, and examples prepared by the course professor. Courses in this collection included Finance, Marketing, Production, Sales Management, Problems in Collective Bargaining, and more. Also included in the materials are Smith’s handwritten marginalia, notes, assignments, and exams.
Biographical / Historical
Peter Walker Smith was born May 19, 1923 in Syracuse, NY. He grew up in the nearby town of Camillus, NY where he was raised by his parents Stanley and Elizabeth Smith. He went on to receive a chemical engineering degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1947. Smith continued on to Harvard Business School graduating cum laude in 1948. Afterwards, he attended Cleveland Marshall Law School where he completed a J.D.
Smith served in the armed forced during World War II and the Korean War. He worked his way up in financial executive positions starting as a controller, then vice president of finance, and ended as chief financial officer. He spent his business career working for companies such as Raytheon Co., Litton Industries, Copeland Corporation, and Instrumentation Lab Inc. Peter W. Smith passed away on August 23, 2008 in Concord, MA.
