Walter Frederick Frese was an expert in government accounting practices. He was born in 1906 in Denison, Iowa. He graduated with a BA in economics from the University of Iowa in 1928 and an MA in accounting from the University of Illinois in 1930. After graduation he became a certified public accountant and taught at the University of Illinois for five years. Frese enlisted in the military during World War II. After the war, Frese worked at the US Treasury Department and General Accounting Office.
Frese was appointed Visiting Professor of Business Administration in 1956. In 1968, he became the first Lovett-Learned Professor of Business Administration. After two years he filled the first endowed accounting chair, the Arthur Lowes Dickinson Professor of Business Administration. Frese became an Emeritus Professor in 1972. He died in 1987.
