Robert Grant & Co. voucher book

Scope and Contents

Voucher book recording provisions bought and consigned by English merchants Robert Grant & Co., dated 1775-1776. Among the goods they sold were butter, beef, flour, vinegar, molasses, rum, bread, and cheese. The company had contracts in Boston, Newport, Rhode Island, and Halifax, Nova Scotia. There are also charges for stocking and preparing shipments to these locations. In Boston, the firm rented storage space from George Minot and Mary Phillips. Accounts included Admiral Graves, probably British Navy commander Samuel Graves (1713-1787) and Loyalist merchant Alexander Brymer (1745-1822), the agent for Grant & Co. in Halifax.

Biographical / Historical

Robert Grant & Co. were English merchants active in the 1770s in America and Canada. The firm had contract in North America to victual the Royal Navy, and atfer the outbreak of the Revolutionary War, supplied provisions to Loyalist merchants and British forces.
