Scope and Contents
Receipt book kept by Boston merchant and shipowner Alexander Hill, primarily recording payments for freighting flour and iron from Philadelphia and Baltimore and purchase of wholesale flour in Boston, dated 1757-1775. The volume also contains receipts for commodities like hemp, pepper, paint, and oil, and for personal expenses like milk, shoes, and medical attendance by Dr. John Perkins. Among the other signatures are cooper Joshua Pico, and merchants Joseph Barrell (1739-1804), Fortesque Vernon, and Thomas Amory. Ships referenced are Hill's brig Captain Rogers, the sloops Rainbow and Peggy, and schooners William and Friendship. Jack Tufts signed his mark for payments received for carrying personal items of Hill's son to and from Cambridge in February 1770 and 1771; and in March 1774, Lydia Steward signed her mark for receipt of her wages as Hill's maid. There are also receipts from John Bound for nursing his wife provided to the Hill family. The bulk of the volume contains accounts of Rebecca Jewett of Boston, dated from 1840 to 1882, recording expenses and income. It is unclear if she is a relation of Alexander Hill.
