Shawmut, Pa. Coal Land records

Scope and Contents

Records of various coal mines in which Boston investors, headed by Leverett Saltonstall, S. L. French, and William D. Coolidge, were interested. Included are records of Pennsylvania Cannel Coal Company (1860-1865), Shawmut Cannel Coal Company (1861-1865), Shawmut and Ridgway Railroad Company (1862- ), Pennsylvania Cannel Coal and Railroad Company (1865- ), Shawmut Coal Company of Elk County (1867- ). There are records of properties in Shawmut Village, including a general store. By 1869 the properties were being operated in the name of the Trustees of Pennsylvania Coal Lands. In 1875 some of the properties were disposed of to Northwestern Mining and Exchange Company of Erie, Pa.

Biographical / Historical

Joseph Veazie and his wife in 1860 sold various coal lands in Elk and Jefferson Counties, Pa. to S.L. French, Leverett Saltonstall, and William D. Coolidge, Trustees. The Pennsylvania Cannel Coal Company was formed that year, with Leverett Saltonstall, President: Francis Tuckerman, Treasurer; and Joseph Veazie, General Superintendent. The Shawmut Cannel Coal Col. was begin in 1861 and the Shawmut & Ridgway Railroad Co. was formed. All of these ventures seem to have been merged into the Shawmut Coal Co. of Elk County in 1867. Offices were maintained in Chicago, Buffalo, and Erie. Shawmut Village wsa built up with stores for employees and the like. By 1869, Josiah Bardwell, Leveretty Saltonstall, David Sears, J. Francis Tuckerman, Mark R. Wendell; 1878, L. Saltonstall, W.C. Endicott, M.R. Wendell, R.S. Fay, J.F. Tuckerman; 1882, L. Saltonstall, M.R. Wendell, J.F. Tuckerman, W.C. Endicott, J.Q. Adams. In 1875 some of the properties were disposed of the Northwestern Mining & Exchange Co. of Erie.
