The Patrick R. Liles papers contain research files related to his study of small investment companies and venture capital firms. Liles created subject files on individual companies, which include filing papers, internal memos, statistical information, correspondence and annual reports. The collection also includes research on to the history of two large venture capital firms: Boston Capital Corporation (BBC) and American Research and Development (ARD).

Biographical / Historical

Patrick R. Liles was Associate Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Business School and was a member of the faculty from 1966 to 1977. He helped establish “Starting New Ventures” which he taught from 1969 to 1977. By the time he left HBS to enter the venture capital field, the course was one of the school's most popular electives. While a member of the faculty, Liles wrote two books, New Business Ventures and The Entrepreneur and Sustaining the Venture Capital Firm. Liles was born in 1937, and received multiple degrees: BA in engineering and applied physics from Harvard in 1960, BA in psychology from Cambridge University in 1962, MBA from Harvard Business School in 1964, and MA in psychology from Cambridge University in 1966. He went on to receive his DBA from Harvard Business School in 1970. He died on November 7, 1983.

The collection is arranged into two series: Series I. Small Business Investment Company Subject Files and Series II. Venture Capital Research.
