The collection dates from 1920s to the 2000s, although the bulk of the collection focuses on the years between the 1950s and 1980s, during which time the industry went through major changes: the creation of OPEC, the oil embargo of the 1970s, the flood of oil to the markets in the 1980s. The 1990s saw a large number of consolidations of established companies and attempts to extract oil from deeper deposits. The collection consists of records for individual oil & gas companies, annual reports, and records for Carl H. Pforzheimer & Co. The records for the individual oil & gas companies include internal company publications, SEC documents, annual reports, maps, newspaper and magazine articles, analysts’ reports, and correspondence. The majority of companies covered in the collection are American and Canadian. There are a few European companies, such as Royal Dutch Shell and British Petroleum. The collection has a large run of annual reports from the various Standard Oil Companies (California, Indiana, New Jersey, New York and Ohio) and their eventual successors. The records for Carl H. Pforzheimer & Co. include correspondence, internal reports, securities underwriting files and information on seminars, meetings and travel. The collection is organized into three series: I. Oil & Gas Company Records II. Annual Reports, and 3. Carl H. Pforzheimer & Co. Records.
