Series I. Correspondence/Subject files, 1947-1995

Scope and Contents

This series consists of letters to Andrews and copies of his outgoing letters, as well as reports, manuscripts, articles and other enclosures. Correspondents include Harvard Business School colleagues, business executives, others with shared areas of study and interest. The subjects include the mission of business education; the teaching and goals of business policy and upper-level management; the shaping and direction of Business Policy courses; executive development and training programs; and case leads and discussions of case development.

There is substantial correspondence with Andrews' mentor, Edmund P. Learned. The bulk of these letters were written while Andrews was in Switzerland during the academic year of 1958 -1959. The correspondence with Learned includes a long memorandum from Andrews discussing the focus of his book, Nook Farm and its relationship to business policy; and letters discussing the development of the Business Policy course. (There is also correspondence with Edmund P. Learned in Series III. Research and Writing.)

This series includes a letter from Andrews to Nathan Pusey, President of Harvard (July 18, 1969) on choosing a new dean for Harvard Business School; and correspondence related to efforts to establish a graduate school of business administration at the University of Witwatersrand (1964-1966) in South Africa.
