Account book of Henry W. Dodd

Scope and Contents

This is the household account book of Henry W. Dodd from 1869 to 1881. The years 1869 to 1871 keep precise, detailed records of Dodd’s income and expenses. Common expenses include clothing, museum and theater tickets, ice cream and fruit, alcohol, presents for family members, and medicine and doctor bills. There are occasional comments and puns by Dodd. There is a gap from 1871 to 1875, at which point the handwriting, content, and form of the record became less carefully maintained; in 1876, Dodd himself noted that “Bal. Book all in a muss.” There are fewer comments during this period, mostly concerning Dodd’s efforts to stop drinking. The end of the book is a record of the account of Henry’s mother, Caroline W. Dodd, and a list of assets.
