The materials in this collection document the career of Jay O. Light as a member of the faculty and dean at Harvard Business School. The bulk of the collection contains records Light created for teaching Finance courses for the MBA program. The collections also contains writings based on Light’s research including HBS case studies, HBS and National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) working papers, and other research papers. Materials in the collection include packets for each class session in the courses Light taught, and copies of his writings in draft and published forms.

Biographical / Historical

Jay Owen Light was a professor of Finance at Harvard Business School, and later dean of the school. Light was born October 3, 1941 in Lorain, Ohio. He received a bachelor’s degree from Cornell University in 1963. In 1970, he earned a doctorate from Harvard University’s joint program in decision and control theory. In the same year he joined the faculty at HBS. His integrative valuation and negotiation classes were taught to all first year students in the MBA program Finance course. He also authored many case studies including one on the Harvard Management Company, published in 1993, which continues to be a bestseller. In 2005, Light was appointed dean of the Harvard Business School, a position he held until 2010. Light died on October 15, 2022.
