Biographical / Historical

Jonathan Russell (1825-1875) and Edward H. Green were members of an earlier form of Russell & Sturgis. In 1871, Russell and Green entered into an agreement that Russell would purchase the interest of Edward H. Green in Russell & Sturgis of Manila, Philippines to be paid in installments with interest paid annually. After Russell’s death in 1875, there was disagreement as to how this was executed and whether Green had a claim against Russell’s estate individually or as the endorser of the instruments. In addition to the matter of Green and Russell, there were other claims of creditors against Jonathan Russell’s estate and against Russell & Sturgis. Arthur Lord Huntington was the council appointed for the estate. The matter went to the Supreme Judicial Court of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Russell & Sturgis was declared bankrupt in 1875.
