Scope and Contents

The Lawrence E. Thompson papers contain correspondence, teaching and research materials, consulting records, and personal and biographical information. Correspondence includes both personal and professional letters related to his work as a professor at HBS, research interests, and other topics with peers, professors, friends, colleagues, business leaders, and government officials. Teaching and research records include preparation for HBS cases, teaching materials, notes, and collected printed materials. The consulting records include material related to his work as a director at Eastern Gas & Fuel Associates and bankruptcy cases he worked on as a tax consultant. Personal material includes photograph albums and loose photographs, newspaper clippings, and biographical information.

Biographical / Historical

Lawrence E. Thompson was born in California in 1919. He received a Bachelor of Arts (BA) from Dartmouth College in 1941. Thompson enlisted in the Navy and served in World War II, 1942-1945, on submarines in the Pacific Ocean. After the war, Thompson enrolled at Harvard University, earning a Master of Public Admminitration (MPA) (1947) and a PhD (1952) in economics. He joined the Harvard Business School (HBS) faculty in 1949, became Assistant Professor in 1951, Associate Professor in 1957, and full Professor in 1961. Thompson taught finance and managerial economics. In addition to teaching at HBS, he took leaves of absence to teach finance at the Management Development Institute (IMEDE), in Laussane, Switzerland in 1958-1959 and 1966-1967. He retired from the HBS faculty in 1981.

Thompson served as a director at Eastern Gas & Fuel Associates and served as a tax consultant after his retirement from HBS. He died in March 2005.
