Ship Milton and Bark Callao logbooks

Scope and Contents

Ship Milton outfits and advances for crew for five voyages to the Pacific Ocean in 1869, 1873, 1876, 1880 and 1886. Captains T Wilson (1869), W.C. Fuller (1873), John R. Stivers (1876), and Sylvanus B. Potter (1880). Bark Callao outfits and advances to crew for four voyages in the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans, 1862, 1871 and 1875. Captains Frederick S. Howland (1862), Roswell Brown (1865), Ferdinand Lee (1871) and Henry T. Craw. On the last voyage the Bark Callao was condemned at Mauritius in 1878. While identification of race is not included in the crew list, crew lists from the New Bedford Whaling Museum suggest that both ships had Black crew members on the various whaling voyages.

Biographical / Historical

The Ship Milton was built at Milton, Massachusetts in 1815. Ship Callao whaling ship out of New Bedford (1842-1858) and was rerigged to a bark in 1858.
