0.25 linear feet (1 volume)Collection consists of one journal kept by Gideon Welch relating to his ownership of Hinman Farm, 1907-1917. Bulk of journal details farm expenses including items and services bought, amount paid and daily chores. Volume is in chronological order and includes receipts and clippings pasted on some pages. Occasional diagrams of plantings, orchards, and borders included as well.
Biographical / Historical
Gideon Welch, son of James and Eliza (Higgins) Welch, was born on September 22, 1844 in Chatham, Connecticut. He married Susan C. Agard of Torrington and purchased the Hinman Farm in January 1907. Located in Harwinton, Connecticut, the Hinman Farm consisted of ninety acres for which Welch paid $2,350. Welch lived in Torrington and leased the land to others. Throughout the years of his journal, he invested heavily in trees, plants, seeds, livestock, farm equipment and hardware as well as paying for farm labor. Welch died on September 29, 1927 in Torrington, Connecticut.
