Scope and Contents

The series is arranged alphabetically by correspondent. It includes letters on many aspects of the insurance business as well as correspondence from men seeking positions with the company or its proprietary clubs and restaurant; business proposals, especially real estate; politics and lobbying; complaints from the disgruntled insured. Of great importance is the subseries "Memos to HBH, 1876-1899 which are from company executives all over the world concerning administration, sales, real estate, public image, loans, policies, disputed claims, and hiring of agents. Many were written from the New York main office to HBH while he was out of the country and are very detailed and explicit.
