Series I. Correspondence, 1788-1817
Scope and Contents
This series consists of correspondence mostly written to Moses Brown by merchants and agents in domestic and foreign cities and by ship captains in Brown's employ. Letters from merchants and agents relate to the price of goods and stores, the current economic climate in their particular location, information about shipments, account balances, and concerns about blockades due to war. Letters from ship captains relate to voyage updates including ship damage, weather, and sailing time, prices of goods, and successes and failures in selling and purchasing provisions and goods. Correspondents include Don Juan Stoughton, Spanish Consul to the United States; Portsmouth, New Hampshire, merchants Martin Parry and William Ham; Charleston, South Carolina, merchant Joseph Winthrop; Amsterdam merchant house Lange & Bourne; Boston merchants Joseph H. Adams, Joseph Emerson, Joseph H. Woodman and William Wyer, Jr.; and ship captains Stephen Holland, William Picket, William Russell, and Samuel Chandler. The correspondence contains a large gap between 1803 and 1816.
