Seminar For Pyschoanalysts: The Pyschoanalytic Study of Leadership (Zaleznik) - American Pyschoanalytic Association, 1987 December 16-20 Digital

Scope and Contents

This is a recording of the fall meeting of the American Psychoanalyst Association which took place on December 16-20, 1987. The recording starts in the middle of Zaleznik’s discussion. He starts off by talking about consulting and his advice for consultants. Namely: keep a clear head, observe the environment and understand dynamics then position yourself to make change within the organization and be clear and transparent about what you are doing. Zaleznik emphasizes calling out incompetent people in positions of power, blocking regressive problems, and making constructive suggestions. Zaleznik also discusses the term “resistance to change”, the importance of depoliticizing organizations, symbolic forms of communication, Sam Walton as a leader, power sensitive neurosis, and Freud’s analysis of leaders.
