Communications and the Future, 1982 Digital

Scope and Contents

Live recording of keynote address given by John Diebold at the World Future Society meeting. Diebold briefly talks about what his interests were when he was student (“industrial archeology” and Adam Smith) and how it influenced him and how this relates to what he is going to talk about, particularly how they relate to some of the developments that are currently going around. Topics include the development of the computer and all of the things that go today under our rubric of automation, the growth of this industry that we’ve witnessed the last 30 years; the changes that are going on in technology are marvelous changes, including human-machine interface; most of the use of automation has been to mechanize the work we are doing; and the developments in this field have raised relatively few discernible public policy problems.
