John Diebold (Making the Future Work) and George Gilder (The Spirit of Enterprise) interviewed by Ted Kovaleff about the topic of a free enterprise system, how our society operates and how society arrives (or doesn’t arrive) at solving problems. Also talks/debates about a wide variety of topics, including bringing competition to telecommunication areas, moving towards the decontrol of the telecommunication industry. Makes reference to AT & T, Ericsson, Bell Labs, Western Electric, and Nippon Electric. Industrial policy and the U.S. position in the world with respect to “high” technology. Particular focus on whether the U.S. is on the cutting edge of new technology (robotics, semiconductors). Diebold comments about the great success of technology in the area of agriculture. Imports and exports (particularly regarding imports from Japan and how the U.S. can compete. Diebold talks about “true” growth industries, highlighting semiconductors and biotechnology.
