Series XII/XIII. Combined Correspondence Files, 1869-1920 Digital

Scope and Contents

The series consists of correspondence to and from Henry Lee Higginson, relating to business matters, charities and philanthropic ventures, personal and family concerns, Radcliffe College, Harvard University, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Carnegie Institute, and many other organizations and associations. These files include correspondence originally deposited in Houghton Library. When this collection was united with existing files in Baker Library, two series were created (XII and XIII). At a later date, the two were combined to form one continuous run of correspondence. From 1869-1911, the correspondence consists mostly of letters to Higginson. From 1912 on, there are increasing numbers of copies of his replies and, by 1914, well over half the material is from him.

Arrangement

The arrangement of series XII/XIII is chronological by year, with a few folders at the very beginning which contain undated or illegible letter fragments. Within each year, letters are organized according to the following system: prolific correspondents of the year, and an occasional subject, are organized into separate folders and these are arranged alphabetically; after the "individual" folders are ranged the four main "subject" folders: Family, Music, Harvard/Radcliffe, and Carnegie Institute (in that order); at the end of the year's correspondence are general folders containing the correspondence (usually one to three letters only) from the year's less prolific individuals and organizations, arranged in alphabetical order.
