Volume 1, 1794 Digital

Scope and Contents

Contains numbered correspondence, accounts, and legal documents related to the capture and condemnation of George Dodge's and Israel Thorndike's cargo and the schooner Three Brothers in St. Lucia by English privateers, dated 1794, and efforts at restitution. The ship carried whale and liver oil, nails, flour, fish, soap, linen, and candles. Correspondence from Thorndike to the captain, William Abbott, prior to the ship's capture, instructs him to return with molasses, sugar, coffee, and cocoa, and warns him not to "take on board any property or passengers belonging to any of the subjects of the power at war" or else risk being captured by privateers. The letter further advises him to sell the cargo at an English island in the West Indies, rather than a French port because he may get better prices. Also includes a copy of Abbott's declaration and protest after the ship was captured and a portage bill.
