Daniel Rindge letter book, 1748-1750 Digital

Scope and Contents

Volume of letters by Daniel Rindge (1731-1799) written from 1748/9 to 1750. Included are letters to London agent John Thomlinson and a memoranda of dry goods Rindge ordered, and to Halifax, Nova Scotia, merchant and naval storekeeper Joseph Gerrish (1709-1774) regarding trade of mangos, logwood, oil, molasses, shipment of coal to Boston from Louisbourg, and vessels traveling to Casco Bay and the West Indies. Rindge additionally references activities of Prince and Jenny, who were probably enslaved by the Gerrish family in Boston. There are several letters to Rachel Martin and her husband Captain Isaac Martin about delivery of leaking hogsheads of molasses to Boston, and her orders of molasses and flour. There are also captain's orders to Martin, who commanded ships carrying Rindge's exports and return cargo from Casco Bay, England, Holland, and the West Indies. Items he traded included logwood, pickles, rum, sugar, and oil.
