George Frost, Sr., and George Frost, Jr., ledger, 1727-1800 Digital

Scope and Contents

Ledger of some accounts of George Richards, William Pepperrell, and George Frost, Sr., dated 1727 to 1742, but primarily George Frost, Jr., dated 1795-1809. Included are an account of investors in a 1727 voyage of the William and Mary, commanded by Richards, to Leghorn (Livorno), Italy, and Gibralter such as John Gadd, John White, William Sweet, Margaret Towning, and John Hill. Other names in the volume include Samuel Weeks of Boston; William Colyer of Topsham, who bought cable; and Captain Henry Sherburne of Portsmouth. There are accounts dated 1731 to 1733 of Pepperrell for voyages to Spain to sell cod fish and import salt, and expenses related to shipping. One shipment of fish was sent to Cadiz, Spain, where it was consigned to William Jacks, and there is an account of salt imports with a list of Spanish merchants including Javier Furzca and Juan B. Eschavarri. There is also a list of notes left with Pepperrell to collect payment from Elizabeth Allcock, Margaret Lindall, Elizabeth Cross, Martha Brandford, Robert Down, Captain Hugh Reed, Sampson Sheafe, and others. Accounts of George Frost, Jr., are related to legal services like taking depositions and attendance at court, trade of textile labor by women such as Deborah Bickford, and administration of his father's estate. The volume also contains accounts of produce received at Little Harbor Farm, and a memorandum of the elder Frost's acquisition of the farm from Captain John Salter in 1748.
