Scope and Contents
Receipt book of William Trotter for business and personal expenses, dated 1799-1815. Included are receipts related to shipping with Joseph Sansom and voyages of the ships Pigou and Pocohontas and brig Cumberland; freighting steel, sheet iron, and tin plate; lumber purchases and sawmill labor; and advertising Crowley steel, China and Calcutta goods, and animal skins for sale in the Philadelphia Gazette. There are also receipts from a Society of Friends committee and for fines to William Trotter and Joseph Trotter for nonappearance during militia exercises. Names in the volume include Daniel Elliot, Captain Samuel Volans, Isaac Norris, John Alsop, Snowdon & Fisher, Jacob C. Mott, Hilyard & Pippit, Joseph Drinker, John Read, Caleb Wright, Field & Thomas, and Trotter’s father-in-law Moses Kempton and brother-in-law Ephraim Haines. Trotter was executor of his father Daniel Trotter’s estate, and some records concern settling claims with creditors.
