Stephen Collins correspondence to Jonathan Amory, 1780-1783 Digital

Scope and Contents

Contains correspondence from Philadelphia merchant Stephen Collins, administrator of the estate of William Barrell, to Jonathan Amory, dated 1780-1783. Collins writes about suspension of the sale of bills of exchange by the Continental Congress, settling an account of the estate with Hayley & Hopkins of London, and his correspondence to Barrell's brother, Boston merchant Joseph Barrell (1739-1804) respecting the estate. In May 1783, Collins writes he believes most of the debts due to Barrell's estate have "gone to the dogs" and mentions his personal losses due to depreciation. Other topics include Amory's business transactions, possibly exchanging bills drawn in France, and obtaining payment of protested bills.
