Scope and Contents

Brimmer served as a member of the US Department of Commerce from 1963 to 1966, while he was on leave from the Wharton School. He focused his efforts on reversing the country’s balance of payments deficit, the method used to monitor all international monetary transactions during a specific period. He also served as part of a federal delegation sent to the Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles after rioting took place there in 1965. This subseries contains research into the balance of payments reversal and material Brimmer collected while part of the Watts delegation. Also included in this subseries is research focused on African-American’s in the United States economy. Materials in this subseries include correspondence, economic data collected, scholarly papers and articles used for research.
