Series II. Financial and legal records, 1762-1823
Scope and Contents
This series contains accounts current of John Coffin Jones with American and European merchants and agents, with whom he traded or consigned cotton, sugar, and pepper, insurance policies on ships, and bills of exchange, dated 1762-1823. Also included are records related to a number of lawsuits filed by Jones over protested or fraudulent bills of exchange involving French Consul Philippe de Létombe, and Boston merchants James Swan and Stephen Higginson & Co, as well as a suit against James Greenleaf that resolved in the transfer of lands to Jones and his business partners Jeffrey & Russell. In addition, there are miscellaneous accounts, bills, notes, and receipts, and other financial records of Jones, and records generated during his partnerships with merchants including his brother-in-law Thomas Lee, and M.M. Hays and Henry Jackson, and Jeffrey & Russell, as well as accounts and documents of his father, Ichabod Jones.
