Volume 8, 1808 February-April Digital

Scope and Contents

Contains correspondence, invoices, and bills addressed to Samuel Coates Correspondence from shipmaster Lemuel Pearson, aboard the brig Two Brothers, in Newcastle, England, relates to a broken anchor he sent to Coates for repair, and whether Coates would advise him to discharge his pilot and crew while he waits for the repaired anchor. In a follow up letter, after Pearson received the anchor, he writes Coates about the provisions he will need to sail back to Philadelphia if the Embargo Act is lifted. After apparently receiving no further instructions from Coates, Pearson wrote several more times over the course of February and March repeating his requests for guidance about the crew, which remained on board. There are also several invoices related to the voyage showing Pearson paid for legal advice at Newcastle.
