Scope and Contents
Contains bills, receipts, and invoices for commodities traded by Samuel Coates including flour, candles, vinegar, and sheeting. There is also an account between Coates' friend, Stephen Girard and Samuel Chandler, master of the brig Polly, which freighted goods from Bordeaux, France, to Philadelphia. Some of the records reflect transactions Coates made on behalf of the Pennsylvania Hospital. There are additionally bills from Elizabeth Allen for boarding Rebecca Vicary, charges for mending furniture, and correspondence from Thomas Eddy to Moses Gale about purchasing a ship. An invoice from physicians Samuel Duffield (1732-1814), James Mease (1771-1846), and James Hutchinson (1752-1793) to the owners of the ship Hope includes charges for medicines and attendance of 124 of the ship's passengers at the Marine Hospital, a quarantine facility, during the 1793 yellow fever epidemic.
