Scope and Contents

Contains bills, invoices, and receipts for items traded by Samuel Coates including sugar, beer, and candles There are also several invoices for carpentry work done by the firm of Hatcher & Johnson at Coates' brewery, and from Paul & Christopher Mitchell for supplying labor and freighting goods from Nantucket, Massachusetts to Philadelphia. Additionally, there is an account with the owners of the ship Hope with Susannah Wiser, for sundry disbursements to the 130 passengers and servants who landed at the Marine Hospital, a quarantine facility, after a voyage from Londonderry, Northern Ireland, during the Philadelphia yellow fever epidemic of 1793; she was also compensated for nursing, and for burying fifteen adults and seven children, as well as Henry Dougherty, who may have died of yellow fever.
